Girl dies from asthma attack; family blames slow EMS response

In Detroit, an 11-year-old girl is now gone, she loses her life because of an asthma attack.

Her family says they believe she could have been saved -- if EMS had responded quicker.

"That was my only kid, my only child," said mother Dontae Hudson,

Jada Wallace passed away one week after she turned 11 years old and now Dontae Hudson is grieving with her family. An asthma attack took her daughter's life early Tuesday morning. Jada Wallace passed away one week after she turned 11 years old.

"She went into my room and she couldn't breathe," Hudson said. "I panicked of course, and I get the machine, I call 911 because my baby can't breathe."

Hudson said she called 911 twice but claims it took EMS roughly 25 minutes to arrive at their home and said the dispatcher kept asking for the cross streets.

"I'm telling them my baby can't breathe, she falls to her knees," Hudson said. "I'm trying to get her up and it's like her mind is gone. I called them back and said please hurry up and send someone, and they continued to ask me for a cross street."

The spokesperson for Detroit police spent Friday afternoon looking into the matter. He tells me the first call came in at 7:41 followed by 7:46 this past Tuesday morning, EMS arrived at the home by 7:56.

That doesn't add up to 25 minutes, instead about 15 minutes.

"Those dispatchers maybe need to undergo some more training," said Gabrielle White, the child's great aunt. "I don't know if they have the right questions, but they need to find the right questions to be asking."

"We start CPR and I'm like my baby is not breathing," Hudson said. "And the dispatcher says to me 'Are you doing CPR?' My baby is not breathing. 'Let me hear you count chest compressions.' I'm done. Once I see my baby urine on herself, I pretty much knew."

FOX 2 has been told that DPD Chief James Craig is taking the matter very seriously and that the department has started an investigation to figure out what went wrong.

At this point, the department says it's looking into what needs to be done to prevent this from happening again.
