How Michigan dispensaries are celebrating 420
Detroit, (FOX 2) - It’s Marijuana’s biggest holiday and the first since recreational weed has been made legal in Michigan. While medical dispensaries like The Reef can’t sell yet, they are seeing an increase in sales and a more positive buzz around the Cannabis Culture.
“In the last 5 or 6 months, we have seen a 20 percent increase.” Said Rush Hasan
That increase started to show when voters made recreational Marijuana legal, by passing Proposal 1 back in November.
“I would say we have 40 or 50 calls a day asking when recreational will be ready, but unfortunately, it’s only medical at this point,” said Hasan.
Medical dispensaries like The Reef on 8 Mile in Detroit cannot apply for license to sell recreationally because they haven’t been drawn up at the state level yet.
“We believe in the next 4 to 5 months, the rules should be flushed out for some businesses like ourselves to go in and file for an application for a recreational license,” said Hasan.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer wanted to streamline the application process. A new state agency forms next month to oversee both medical and recreational Marijuana.
“We hope things will be a lot more efficient and move a lot quicker and smoother,” Hasan said.
Typically, 420 is a busy day for dispensaries along the Cannabis Corridor on 8 mile.
“I’m here to celebrate,” said Medical Marijuana Patient Sherita Thompson.
“I came out today in the rain for the deals,” said Allison Charneskim another Medical Marijuana Patient.
Both of these patients have been using medically for 3 years.
“I had a lot of pain coming off the Chemo. I was a breast cancer patient,” Charneski said.
Charneski tell us since recreational was made legal, it’s made Marijuana more widely accepted in her life.
“I couldn’t get out of bed before and now I can take my kids to school everyday,” Chrneski said.
Once the state starts approving recreational licenses in the next five months, you will be able to buy Marijuana, with restrictions, right from dispensaries.
