Macomb County Sheriff clears Fraser police in deadly shooting of 15-year-old
(FOX 2) - The grandmother of the teenager killed by Fraser police in late May had previously called 911 about her grandson "losing his mind" and expressed concern that he was armed with a dangerous weapon prior to the shooting.
Bodycamera footage and 911 audio were played by the Macomb County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday, revealing the moments leading up to 15-year-old Ayden being shot by an officer.
Following an investigation by the sheriff's office, the department cleared the Fraser officers involved of wrongdoing in the shooting.
Big picture view:
The Macomb County Sheriff held a press conference on Wednesday, 11 days after the deadly shooting.
Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said the shooting was justified and they will close the case out after a report from the Macomb County Medical Examiner.
911 call
Prior to the shooting, the investigation into the case found Ayden had assaulted his grandmother and was previously taken into custody. He was arrested for domestic violence by Fraser police before bing moved to alternate housing.
Wickersham said the attempt was done "with no success."
Later that evening, he was released back into his grandmother's custody, who soon after called 911 after becoming fearful of Ayden's behavior and feeling threatened.
From her neighbor's residence, the grandmother of the teen called 911 requesting an officer. "He is losing his mind because I won't give him his phone."
She told the dispatch center she gave him her phone to call his grandfather, but then wouldn't return it.
"And then, he's standing at the door with one hand behind his back," she said. "Whatever is in his other hand — I didn't trust him, so I'm at the neighbor's house."
Bodycam footage
Video played from the bodyworn cameras of two of the three responding officers included the deputies responding to the home, calling out to Ayden, and coming up with a plan to take him into custody when he refused to comply with officer's requests.
During the video, he can be heard yelling "kill me" before charging an officer while wielding a 5-inch steak knife.
Police twice used tasers to attempt to subdue Ayden with little to no effect.
The video from the officer that fired shots shows Ayden running at him with the knife. The officer fires four shots, striking Ayden three times.
Dig deeper:
Police had previously responded to the home four times, including three instances in 2026.
Wickersham also said Ayden was a suspect in a criminal investigation out of New Baltimore in connection with auto thefts.
The backstory:
The May 30 incident took place on Saturday when an officer was dispatched to the 17000 block of Breezeway following reports of a domestic dispute.
When Fraser Police arrived, an officer shot a 15-year-old male. Emergency medical assistance was provided at the scene before the teen was taken to the hospital for treatment. They were pronounced deceased soon after.
The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation has been turned over to the sheriff's office.
The family of the boy is calling the shooting unacceptable.
Apparently the teen was with his grandma on Saturday afternoon. She was the person who called 911 and told dispatchers she felt uncomfortable because he was hiding a hand behind his back and she could not see what he was doing.
