Metro Detroit takes advantage of unseasonably warm temps

People all over metro Detroit  are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather - but, it's not good news for everyone.

Mt. Holly General Manager Mark Tibbits hopes for a lot of snow soon.

All the snow  there right now is man-made, but now it's too warm for even the machines to make now, which has skiers hoping for colder temperatures soon.

With no snow in the forecast, temperatures will have to drop to 28 degrees for the snowmakers to work. Until then, the slopes, the ski lifts, and the parking lots, are empty.

"Wishing for a white Christmas you got it," said Mark Tibbitts, Mt. Holly General Manager. "That's the song I sang at the company Christmas party."

Only a few ski and snowboard resorts are open in Michigan at this time, and they're up north. Slopes in the lower half of the state, like Mt. Holly are experiencing their latest seasonal opening in the past few years.

"Do I like seeing green grass and December absolutely not," said Tibbitts. "I'm accustomed to being in the ski business and watching people sliding down the hill and having a great time. I'm a little sad for that.

"But, hopefully when winter comes in, it's instead of throwing rainstorms at Christmas like we had last year."

Skiers and snowboarders may be disappointed, but meanwhile at the Royal Oak Golf Center, golf lovers play hooky for a nice day at the driving range.

"I belong to a club in the area and I've played all the way up until the end of December on some years," said Garrett Mouw, a Birmingham resident.

Golfers taking advantage of warmer temps, thrilled to squeeze in one more day at the range, before turning in for the season.

"Golfers and skiers somewhere they disconnect, maybe the end of December," Mouw said. "Golfers stop and skiers start.

Soon enough though, the snow will be deep and these slopes will be packed.
