Online threat made against Marine City school principal
MARINE CITY, Mich. (WJBK) - The latest one is against the Marine City Middle School principal. The middle school is connected to the high school and elementary school, but all three will be open on Tuesday.
Police say they will have a presence on campus like they usually do, but that is not easing parents' concerns.
"I thought it was a hoax at first, they're always trying to get out of school for something," said Marine City school parent Mike Aitken.
But a letter from the Marine City Police Department was anything but. It details a threat against the Marine City Middle School principal.
According to the police chief, the threat included a tweet saying "I'm a shoot up your school."
"That should be enough," said Aitken.
Mike Aitken's four daughters attend Marine City's elementary, middle and high schools. He says the East China school district should've cancelled classes Tuesday.
And even though the police chief says he's confident and comfortable with sending his kids to school, Mike's girls will stay home.
"Just to be safe," he said. "Better safe than sorry."
"I'm just like thinking I want to go to school because I don't want it to be held against me," said Marissa Aitken. "But then in the back of my head, what if it happens like what happened last week in Florida?"
It's a question that's hard to ignore after a gunman killed 17 people in the Parkland Florida school shooting last week.
The Marine City Police Department says it and the school district is taking every precautionary measure to keep students and staff safe.
Investigators don't know who was behind this threat. The tweet came from a ghost account with no location services attached to it. The school district would only say they are cooperating with the investigation.
