Orion Twp stabbing: Investigators release new information on caseworker attack

Officials have new information regarding the alleged attack on a Samaritas caseworker at his home in Orion Township by someone he was helping through his job.

The backstory:

On Wednesday, a refugee helped by the caseworker somehow tracked down their home on Red Root Road, showed up there, and stabbed them repeatedly.

What they're saying:

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard says the victim is lucky to be alive and is now stable. They suffered 20 cuts and stabs.

Police are saying they have an idea of what led to the stabbing, as they believe it may be related to religion.

"They both were from Afghanistan. May go back to something along that lines, maybe different sects of the religion," said Bouchard.

FOX 2 reached out to Samaritas about the incident and they released a statement:

"We are deeply saddened by yesterday's incident involving one of our dedicated caseworkers. The safety and well-being of our staff, clients, and community remain our top priority."

Meanwhile, the investigation into the stabbing has faced a hurdle as police say the suspect has a lawyer and is not cooperating with authorities.

What's next:

As the investigation continues, Bouchard makes it clear it can be difficult to investigate cases when the suspect is not a U.S. citizen.

"It’s hard obviously to have a lot of background on individuals that have come from other countries without a full and complete vetting," he said. "We don’t know when they come in, where they’re coming from if they are actually people they purport to be."

The Prosecutor’s Office is waiting on a report from the sheriff’s office before handing down charges.
