Police: Man died on Detroit freeway while fleeing assault

State police say a 30-year-old man was struck by a vehicle and killed on the Southfield Freeway in Detroit after he fled when troopers arrived to investigate a report of an assault.

State Police Lt. Calvin Hart says an investigation is underway to determine exactly what happened on the freeway about 3:20 a.m. Sunday. Hart says police don't know whether the man who was the victim of an assault, was involved in the assault or if there was an assault.

He says there were four or five men along the freeway when troopers arrived. Hart says the driver of the vehicle is cooperating with police.

The victim's name is being withheld until his family can be notified.

The freeway was closed for about four hours.
