Snyder talks about approval rating dropping to 52 percent
MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. (WJBK) -
Gov. Rick Snyder's approval rating hits a new low, but he says it's time to move on from past mistakes.
And at the Mackinac policy conference he's opening up to Charlie Langton.
There is a new survey that came out Wednesday that has a lot people on the island buzzing about Gov. Snyder. They are asking if he is still effective, can he overcome this
disappointed type of unfavorable rating.
"If you look at the track record over the last five and a half years, I've seen a lot of ups and downs," Snyder said.
Talk about ups and downs - Snyder has a 52 percent disapproval rating as the governor meets hundreds this week on Mackinac Island.
"You just have to have hope and conviction that you are doing the right thing and follow through," Snyder said. "And let it work out so people can see it was a good call and good decision and we're better off."
Take the wisdom of another governor, Jim Blanchard, who gave this governor some advice.
"You were elected to do the job and you do the job," he said. "You have to feel that you're doing the right thing and not worry about public opinion. In his case, he cannot run again he's term limited. So he doesn't have to worry about re-election."
But being in politics is a tough job.
"If you're looking for people to love you in politics today, forget it," Blanchard said. "If you're looking for friends as Harry Truman said, get a dog."
"I've got a dog," Snyder said. "I just had a 15th birthday party for him so he's an older dog. Maybe us old dogs can learn new tricks."
What is dogging the governor, obviously, is the Flint water crisis. He didn’t talk too much about that to be honest. also, a little frustration of not getting something done with Detroit Public Schools.
What he did focus on was auto technology and the fact they're making a lot of innovations on self-driving cars. Snyder said he hasn't driven a car in six years.
Regarding Detroit Public Schools, there has been no movement there. Langton talked to one state senator who at Mackinac Island said term limits are the reason because those people in the state House just don't understand the facts. A lot of disagreement there.
