'This isn’t rocket science': Prosecutor slams gun owners who don't lock up weapons after Detroit child wounded

Alahondro Von Fitzpatrick

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy is sick of gun owners not locking up their weapons.

"There is a very simple solution to these deaths and injuries to our children. Safely. Store. Your. Guns," she said in a press release announcing charges against the father of a boy who shot himself last week. "This is one plus one stuff. This isn’t rocket science."

The backstory:

Alahondro Von Fitzpatrick, 31, was charged Monday with felony firearms and violating Michigan's safe storage law after his 4-year-old son got ahold of an unsecured gun and shot himself in the hand.

Detroit 4-year-old shoots self in hand, multiple guns found in home

A Detroit 4-year-old shot himself in the hand after finding a loaded and unsecured gun on Friday.

It happened Friday around 12:25 p.m. in the 3300 block of Fullerton in Detroit. The boy was taken to a hospital for treatment of what police called a minor injury. No one else was hurt.

Police said that in addition to the gun the boy shot himself with, several other firearms were in the home.

Big picture view:

Michigan's safe storage law requires guns to be locked up when children are inside a home.

Under the law, a gun owner could be subject to a misdemeanor charge, which could entail penalties of up to $500 and a maximum of 93 days in jail.

However, if the child inflicts harm upon themselves or others using the firearm, the owner can face a felony charge, fines of up to $10,000, and a prison sentence up to 15 years – particularly if the incident results in a fatality.
