Toddler shot in the foot while asleep at home

(WJBK) - It was a knock at a window that woke up Marcia Barnett and made her get out of bed.

“It's not uncommon here, it’s happened already people to knocking on the Windows,” Barnett said.

But seconds later Barnett says her 3-year-old son Esteban who she calls Essie started screaming. 

“He's been shot my whole body just froze,” she said.

Barnett says at least 13 bullets were fired into her home on Annabelle Street. One of those bullets hit Essie in his foot and she says the other bullets just missed her nephew who was sleeping next to Essie.

“His head was this far from the bullet hole,” she explained.

Looking at the aftermath Barnett says her home was a target, but she says she just moved into the house this summer and doesn't have enemies.

“I don't understand why someone would want to hurt us,” she said.

Little Essie was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment but doctors say it could be 3 to 4 weeks before he is able to walk on his own.

As Barnett keeps a watchful eye on her son she says it's difficult to have hate in her heart toward the person who did this to her son.

“I first I wanted the people to feel the same type of pain but then I thought that would hurt someone else's son,” she said.

As the police investigation continues, Barnett gives her son medication to ease the pain and says that she, Essie and her other kids will no longer call this house home.

“I just can’t believe this is what we call home, this is no longer home.”
