Winter blast leaves about 25K without power in SE Michigan

A wintery mix of sleet, snow and ice hit southeast Michigan hard on Monday.

Drivers were slipping and sliding and downed power lines were reported around the area. Aside from the snow, ice and rain, wind gusts reached more than 30 miles per hour. 

A Winter Weather Advisory was issued until 1 a.m. for Livingston, Genesee, Lapeer, St. Clair, Macomb and Oakland counties. The wintery mix is expected to turn into rain overnight.

Temperatures are expected to rebound overnight with Tuesday's forecast hitting 40 degrees, but it was small consolation for those left in the dark or dealing with fender-benders.

About 25,000 DTE Energy customers were without power, according to Vanessa Waters.

"The Ann Arbor area seems to be the hardest hit," Waters said. "It is because of the wind, primarily."

Waters said DTE expects to have the power back on for most of their customers by Tuesday evening. 

Anyone with downed lines should stay at least 20 feet away and report any outages or seeing anything.
