'You gonna die': Video shows Detroit police-involved shooting that ended with officer being dragged by car

Detroit police released several angles of video footage showing what led to an officer-involved shooting last month that resulted in an officer being dragged by a car.

Officers with the Special Operations Unit were on patrol on St. Mary's, not far from Seven Mile, around 11:40 p.m. Dec. 11. 2024, when they spotted a car blocking a sidewalk, according to Detroit Police Capt. Shaun Dunning.

Watch the video below. NOTE: The video contains mature language and footage. It may be disturbing to some.

What we know:

Police cruiser dashcam video shows the officers pulling into the driveway to block the car, which was backed into the driveway. Dunning said the officers had their emergency lights activated and shined the cruiser's spotlight at the car before getting out and approaching the vehicle with guns drawn.

"Both the subjects are reaching down toward their legs in the center console area," Dunning said. "The subjects were ordered multiple times to raise their hands immediately."

In body cam footage, three officers can be heard yelling at the pair in the car. Officers are heard telling them to put their hands up.

"You gonna die," one officer is heard saying.

Dunning said that at one point, the driver backed up and hit another vehicle parked in the driveway.

"Put your hands up, you're going to get shot," an officer yelled after the driver backed up.

The driver then maneuvered the vehicle toward an officer standing in front of the vehicle, identified by DPD as Officer A.

Amid the chaos of officers yelling, it is difficult to make out who is saying what, but one officer can be heard saying, "I'm gonna (expletive) shoot you," before Officer A fired multiple shots through the windshield.

The driver, who was struck in the chest, then drove forward, hitting and dragging Officer A. Another officer, identified as Officer B, fired shots at the back of the vehicle.

The 18-year-old driver continued fleeing before getting out of the car a few blocks away and calling 911.

Officers arrived at the scene and tended to his injuries before taking him to a hospital, where he was treated and released. The passenger who also fled later turned himself into police.

Detroit police previously said they believed the driver and his 17-year-old passenger may have been involved with a gang. However, that detail was not mentioned in the recent media briefing.

The second passenger turned himself into police at around 2 p.m. Wednesday, reports Jessica Dupnack.

The passenger was released pending further investigation.

What we don't know:

In a media briefing, 2nd Deputy Chief Grant Ha, a legal advisor for DPD, highlighted the different types of leaves officers may be placed on pending a use of force incident. However, it isn't clear what type of leave, if any, the involved officers received.

What's next:

A Homicide Task Force consisting of members from Michigan State. Detroit police, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) will investigate. Their completed investigation report will be provided to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, who will determine if criminal charges are warranted.

An administrative review is also being conducted to determine if the officers acted in accordance with their training and department policies.

If it is determined that the officers violated policy, they could be disciplined.
