From box turtles to bumblebees, long-eared owls and orangethroat darter fish, the DNR recommended dozens of additions to the state's endangered and threatened species list.

Eight Michigan beaches are closed or are under contamination advisories due to high bacteria levels headed into Labor Day Weekend. Four of the beaches are in Southeast Michigan.

Diesel oil from last week's spill in Trenton was found in the city's storm sewer after heavy rain Monday. The EPA said no additional oil has made its way to the Detroit River.

Clean-up of a diesel spill in the Detroit River continues this week in Trenton but the city's quick action is getting a lot of credit for stopping what could have been a catastrophic spill. 

The island's wolf population has reached 28, a dramatic return for the species after it nearly disappeared from the Lake Superior island.

"When we contacted the property owners, they told us those tanks were empty," Kelly said. "And I said they are absolutely not empty - they are completely full, one tank, 20,000 gallons, and we spent a lot of time yesterday and this morning emptying that tank."

"This is just the latest in a series of threats to our waterways and environment and a reminder of the importance of vigilantly protecting our water sources and holding irresponsible actors accountable," said Congresswoman Debbie Dingell.

The chemical bombardment that comes with mosquito removal near a house may be having unintended consequences on the surrounding ecology.

Officials recorded a coronal mass ejection on the sun's surface Tuesday, saying they expected the charged particles to reach Michigan Thursday night.

Last year the health department reported 20 cases of E. coli infections in August. This year cases have risen five times higher, hitting nearly 100 infections.
