DDR rescue group helps dogs from Irma-ravaged Florida look for new homes

(WJBK) - Seven dogs from Florida arrived at Detroit Dog Rescue on Harper Avenue Monday.

"We have linked up with Animal Rescue Corps and we're expecting a shipment of dogs to come in that were affected by Hurricane Irma," said Kristina Rinaldi of the Detroit Dog Rescue. "This is the first shipment of dogs. There will be more to come because not only Florida, but also Texas, really needs some help."

All kinds of dogs from a pit bull to a hound dog came along for the ride to the Motor City.

"A lot of these dogs already were in shelters," Rinaldi said. "And what we are doing is taking dogs that were stuck in shelters for a while, to make room for the dogs that were affected by the hurricane to be in the shelter, to find their families." 

Many of dogs are now hoping they can call Detroit their new home and Detroit Dog Rescue says it needs the public's help to make it happen.

"We have a shelter but these dogs so better in a home," she said. "They've been through a lot and need time to decompress."

And if you can't take one of those dogs in there are other ways to help.

"Detroit dog rescue as a 501(c)(3) all donations are tax-deductible," Rinaldi said. "So whether you go online and want to donate supplies, we have drop-off locations, an Amazon Wish List and you can always donate supplies Donate monetary gifts for their medical care.
