Detroit nonprofit awarded 400K for youth education
DETROIT (AP) - A Detroit-based nonprofit has been awarded $400,000 by the McGregor Fund to educate and train young people between the ages of 16 and 24.
SER Metro-Detroit, Jobs for Progress says the funds will cover two years through the SER YouthBuild Learning Academy and SER Bridges to Career Opportunities. Participants will receive stipends, supportive services, and match funding for federally supported programming.
SER Metro-Detroit serves low-income families and individuals. Its learning academy is an alternative high school that provides classroom instruction while allowing students to learn about building trades. Bridges to Career Opportunities promotes skills for building trades apprenticeships.
President and Chief Executive Eva Dewaelsche says the funding allows the organization to expand its reach “to those most in need and provide a path to meaningful long-term employment and self-sufficiency.”
