Detroit teen shot in the head outside apartments on city's east side

A teen boy was shot in the head in the middle of the day in Detroit, with dozens of children walking around.

Timeline:

Neighbors are calling it a miracle that gunfire missed dozens of children playing outside in Detroit. Sadly, a 17-year-old boy was shot in the head.

"Unfortunately, right now he's critical; he's fighting for his life," said Detroit Police Commander Jevon Johnson.

The 17-year-old was rushed to the hospital Tuesday afternoon after being shot in the head. A neighbor, whom FOX 2 will call "Tina," called it a miracle that no one else was hurt.

What led up to the shooting is unclear.

What they're saying:

According to police, neighbors like "Tina" say gunfire sprayed throughout the parking lot, hitting cars and homes, and then the shooter got away quickly.

"This is not making any sense; it could have been astronomical with a lot of kids out here," Tina said. "For you to not be able to sit on your porch is senseless."

Dig deeper:

The apartments are a Green Light location, which means cameras are strategically placed throughout, and the hope of the Detroit Police Depratment is that witnesses will cooperate.

"If you are a witness and you want to come forward at a later time, we encourage people to do that," said Johnson. "I know it's getting hot; everybody needs to pack their patience and be understanding of each other. Gun violence is not the way."

This is one of several shootings in Detroit just since the start of summer, with child victims.
