Michigan's new 24% wholesale cannabis tax, meant to fund road repairs, is already facing backlash. The Michigan Cannabis Industry Association has filed a lawsuit claiming the tax violates the state constitution. They argue that when voters legalized marijuana in 2018, that law established the only legal way to tax it and that lawmakers can't change it without a three-fourths majority. The state argues it's about fairness and funding infrastructure, but industry leaders warn it could crush small and minority-owned businesses. Jay Snipes is a cannabis advocate and owner of West Coast Meds in Detroit.
