Michigan Medicine implemented new visitor restrictions as the number of COVID-19 cases climb.

The P.1 variant originated in Brazil and was first confirmed in Bay County, near the city of Saginaw. The variant has been associated with increased transmission and reducing vaccine effectiveness.

"Again it's early in the surge -  so until we really gather some data, it's harder to know for sure, but it does look like the patients are a bit sicker than they were in the prior surge," said Dr. Matthew Sims, Beaumont Health.

All Michigan residents over the age of 16 will be eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine on Monday, April 5. The vaccine comes as cases and hospitalizations are spiking, specifically in younger age groups.

The Michigan-based retailer is now offering vaccines to anyone who is eligible. Residents can either send a text or sign up online.

"We know that these vaccines are working, and the reason is that the group being vaccinated now has a decrease in the number of positivity rates," the doctor said.

"If you think it's going to be one of those Opening Days where everybody fills up the bars and restaurants and nobody enforces it, you're wrong," the mayor said.
