An Ypsilanti boy who was shot by a neighbor over the summer received a big Christmas surprise thanks to New Era Detroit.

A 2-year-old girl who has spent most of her life at Motts Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor will be home for Christmas.

The organization provides emergency food and shelter services for families in need year-round, but during the holidays - with the help of generous donations - volunteers work to make sure Christmas wishes come true.

The brother-sister combo from Troy collected over 2,000 pounds of food last year after seeing the need first-hand. This year's goal is 3,000 pounds which will be donated to Saint Vincent de Paul Food Bank in Detroit.

Detroit Police Chief James White was out with some holiday helpers in blue delivering gift cards and cheer.

"I really want to say thank you to each and every last one," Lastar said. "It shows that as a community of people, we all still know how to come together and be able to help one another, despite if you know them or don't know them."

"It’s a miracle and when I think about God, I think about Henry Ford - these people are just so amazing," Brant said. "To be honest, every day is a holiday."

All you have to do is go to any Gardner-White and look for the big trees, each with a tag representing a family, senior or veteran. Make a holiday connection – and adopt a family for the holidays.

"My wife showed me a picture she said, 'Look we are on SNL' and I said that looks like me," he said.

In 2015, Angelena Taylor's father had a massive stroke. Her mother had died years before, so the then-28-year-old graduate student suddenly became his full-time caregiver.

"Not having my father was very difficult for me growing up and it caused a lot of issues with my mental health, especially with depression and having to experience grief in a different way, than most people," Lily said. "I have fought so hard my entire life and luckily I was able to keep my grades up and still go to college."

To his family and community, Cooper Eckert is a walking and swimming miracle. That's because at one point, doctors didn't know if Cooper would ever do either, again.

"Once we got the suspect out of the car, we escorted him back to the patrol vehicle," said Officer Corey Davis. "When I looked at the packages I noticed a different name on each package with different addresses."

Michigan native and World War II veteran Herb Elfring is 99 years old - but you wouldn't know it from talking to him. He says he is happy he was able to make the trip back to Pearl Harbor one more time.

"When it comes to policing sometimes it’s the right place at the right time," said Officer Parrish. "That day I feel like I was at the right place at the right time - and I am happy they’re at home with you."

The discovery came during a traffic stop from a car going through a red light by a pair of officers from the Eighth Precinct.

On Thanksgiving eve, hip hop artist 42 Dugg was on Detroit's east side giving away turkeys to more than 100 deserving families.

"I love them," Coach Wagoner said. "I’m so excited for them. To just to think about them leaving the state to go compete like they did here, on a bigger level, I am so excited for them because I know they can do it."
